2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has one of the most elegant bouquets from Ghislaine Barthod, offering beautiful, seductive red currant, crushed strawberry and crushed rose petal aromas. The palate is very well defined, with strict tannins framing dark berry fruit laced with soy and black pepper. A little introverted toward the finish. Very fine.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vibrant wild strawberry, cranberry and raspberry fruit that has a spring in its step. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe red fruit laced with tangerine and marmalade, and a little spice toward the finish, which is well defined with a slight confit aftertaste. Lovely.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has the most complex bouquet of all the cuvées, presenting minerally, earthy red fruit, rose petals and potpourri and hints of iodine with aeration. Utterly absorbing. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite saline on the midpalate and very structured on the finish, suggesting that this might be one of the longest-lived Chambolles. Excellent.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 1er Cru has a very precise bouquet with perfumed, extremely well focused red fruit infused with rose petals. The palate is defined by filigreed tannins, and the fruit gains weight toward one of the most impressive finishes from Ghislaine Barthod, delivering real mineralité and tension. Highly recommended.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru

There are just two used barrels of the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Combottes 1er Cru. It has a fragrant, precise bouquet of dark cherries, bergamot, bay leaf and light sous-bois aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is linear and structured, delivering gentle grip and dark berry fruit laced with iodine and a hint of hoisin toward the finish. Good potential, but it will need several years in bottle.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark cherries, bergamot and touches of sous-bois – one of the most transparent from the domaine this year. The palate is quite strict and very mineral-driven, with an almost stoic and correct finish. There is something Morey-like about this Baudes. One for those seeking a bit more reserve in this vintage.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru is matured in 20% new oak. It has a splendid bouquet of dark berry fruit and sous-bois aromas, plus a pinch of sage in the background. The palate is grippy and more sinewy than the Combottes, with fine salinité toward the persistent finish. It might lack a little finesse at this stage, but I suspect it will age well.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru comprises three-and-a-half barrels. It has one of the richer bouquets from the domaine, yet still very well defined, with copious dark cherries and raspberry aromas, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is slightly creamy in texture and very harmonious, offering good acidity, dark cherries mixed with blackberry and cedar and a little white pepper toward the finish, where I would just like to see more red fruit develop. Very fine.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru is a small cuvée of just two barrels (two years old). It has a very pixelated bouquet of perfumed red cherry and raspberry preserve aromas laced with rose petals and crushed stone. Saturated tannins render this quite fleshy on the midpalate, though it firms up toward the structured, grippy finish. Very fine.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru is limited to three barrels this year. It has a sense of completeness on the beautifully defined nose, which features pure dark cherry, wild strawberry and crushed stone aromas, all very perfumed and sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and a little spicier than the other cuvées, although I find that this drops away too swiftly on the finish by comparison. Hopefully it will develop more persistence in bottle.

2018 Domaine Ghislaine-Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru represents the most elusive of the domaine’s cuvées, as just one barrel is produced (aged in two-year-old wood). It has an opulent, expressive red cherry and raspberry bouquet laced with kirsch and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a corpulence that I do not find in other cuvées, although I would like more tension and mineralité on the finish.
